Christmas gifts for grandparents, written from their house

Christmas gifts for grandparents are hard because they've told you for years they don't need a thing. What they have is a house where Christmas happened for decades. The card table hauled up for the kids, fourteen gift tags in the same careful block letters. A song about that house is the gift they'll play for every friend who stops by in January.

What to put in the story

What to put in a Christmas song for your grandparents

Every service asks for the story differently. Whatever form you get, these are the details that make it sound like them and not like a greeting card.

The kids' table

They haul the card table up from the basement so the kids' table fits all of us, teenagers too.

Their gift tags

They still buy a present for all fourteen grandkids and write every tag in careful block letters.

Their advent calendar

They hang the same felt advent calendar every December, and the youngest grandkid moves the mouse each morning.

The year they had

This year they sold the house on Maple Street and moved to a condo with room for one tree.

A Christmas away

The year they drove the RV down to Florida and hung our stockings on the dashboard.

What they should hear

Every Christmas I love most happened in your living room, and I've had twenty-six of them.

When to order a Christmas song

Late October

Choose a service from the picks above and ask every grandkid for one Christmas at their house.

Mid-November

Place the order with both their names, how the grandkids say them, and the stories you collected.

Early December

Listen together as a family and check every name. Ask for a change, if the service offers one, where a story got mixed up.

Christmas Day

Play it after dinner while everyone's still at the table, with the volume up a little higher than you think.

Questions

What's a good Christmas gift for grandparents who have everything?

Their own story, played back to them. Grandparents who have everything usually want time and attention more than things. A song made from the Christmases at their house gives them both. It also gives the whole family a reason to sit at the table together for a few minutes.

Can all the grandkids be part of one song?

Yes, and that's often the best version. Ask each grandchild for one memory, and let the little ones say what they call their grandparents. Then trim it to the strongest few. A song that mentions every grandkid by name tends to get played at every visit after.

How do we play it for grandparents who don't stream music?

Bring it to them. Play it from your phone through a small speaker on Christmas Day, then leave them a CD or a small speaker with the song already on it, so nobody needs to help. Ask a neighbor or relative nearby to help them find it again.

What if we can't be with them this Christmas?

Send the song on Christmas morning and set up a video call so you hear it together. Grandparents often keep a song like this playing all week. Mail a printed copy of the lyrics too, so there's something for the fridge.

Find the one that sounds like them.

Pick a service and jot down three of the details above. That's enough to start.
